Secretary for Innovation, Technology & Industry Prof Sun Dong today continued a visit to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with a delegation of representatives from the innovation and technology (I&T) industry.

Prof Sun and the delegation attended a business lunch, hosted by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Dubai, where he spoke to about 120 guests representing the UAE government and business community, in particular I&T industry leaders and executives.

In a keynote speech, Prof Sun said Hong Kong and the UAE have a lot in common, including the vision to develop diversified and sustainable economies and to become leading I&T centres in their regions.

He added that as a super value-adder, Hong Kong makes good use of the distinctive advantages of being backed by Mainland China whilst also being connected to the rest of the world, allowing it to create value through mutually beneficial partnerships with friends in the international community.

Before the lunch, Prof Sun had a brief exchange about I&T development in Hong Kong and the UAE with Under Secretary of the Foreign Trade & Industry of the UAE Ministry of Economy Abdulla Al Saleh, who also attended the event.

In the afternoon, Prof Sun and the delegation visited the Dubai International Financial Centre Innovation Hub to learn about its development as one of the pre-eminent fintech centres and innovation hubs in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia regions. The innovation chief also heard about the hub’s work in fostering the fintech sector’s transformation, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Prof Sun also met Minister of State for Advanced Technology of the UAE Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri. In the meeting, both sides expressed their willingness to strengthen co-operation and collaboration on I&T and new industrialisation between the two places.

Upon arrival in Dubai yesterday, Prof Sun and the delegation visited the Sharjah Research Technology & Innovation Park to learn how it provides an enabling environment for the development and management of innovative ecosystems, and how it supports collaboration between government, industry and academia to promote research and development and entrepreneurial innovation. He also visited the park’s innovation laboratory and data centre.

Prof Sun then called on acting Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Dubai Liu Zhengjie and briefed him on the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s efforts in leading the city to realise its vision of becoming an international I&T hub.
